After over one year of meetings and compromise, the City of La Crosse Sign Ordinance Review Committee has passed the ordinance along to the city committee review process before moving along to the full City Council at the Committee of the Whole meeting on September 11 and the full Council meeting on September 13.
The Chamber has been at the table for all of the Sign Ordinance Review Committee meetings looking out for the interests of businesses as the process involved both on-premise signs, those out in front of your business property, as well as off-premise signs, the majority are billboards located throughout the City.
Another area of concern that we were able to orchestrate some change in the drafting stage of the ordinance deals with height of signage. The last draft of the ordinance
presented by the committee in August had a maximum height of 14 feet. Through negotiation, we were able to amend the maximum height to 20 feet, which concerned us especially on major corridors.
We would encourage your participation in the Council process, should you feel the impact on your business to be potentially adverse. The first meeting of the process is the Judiciary and Administration Committee at 7:30 p.m. on September 4 at City Hall. Stated above the ordinance, will be debated with public comments allowed at the Committee of the Whole on September 11 at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall and then full Council meeting on September 13 at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.
Discussions continue in Onalaska, primarily on electronic billboards and in Holmen, primarily on Electronic Message Unit (EMU) signs.
